Yes, it is indeed a persimmon or kaki (Diospyros kaki) is a tree native to China and cultivated in warm countries for its fruit, the persimmon. It is found in all tropical regions and particularly in the Mediterranean, where it is around the olive and fig trees. The fruits are depressed at the top, somewhat resembling the shape of tomatoes, red-orange at maturity. It should be consumed when they are almost over-ripe and the flesh becomes creamy.
