Author 'Ninik' (Id 231750 ) : A beguinage is a place monastic, which was formerly (as early as the XII-Xiii centuries) built by rich citizens, to allow women only (unmarried or widowed) to live piously, but without being necessarily religious.
The beguinage of Bruges date 1245 ; it was built by Marguerite of Constantinople, countess of Flanders. The last beguine nun died in 1930, and has since been inhabited by a religious congregation of benedictines.
