Boatlift

Author 'Jcmai' (Id 150401 ) : Answer the mystery photo: it was against the weight of the boatlift of St. Louis Arzviler. It was inaugurated in 1969 and replaces the previous 17 locks 4 km. It is situated on the Canal de la Marne au Rhin and permits to cross the northern Vosges. Formerly he had to cross 17 locks, which took between 12 and 13 hours for a maneuvering, which currently lasts 4 minutes. In addition it does not require much energy the weight of the tank truck full of water is equivalent to 2 450 tons of counterweight maintained by a score of SWR (4 are sufficient, we do not skimp on safety) . All the way down it adds "20 cm of water" level, for the rise is the opposite. Formerly spent 30 to 40 barges per day, currently at 2 per week, but passages 8000 annual boaters! European record for this kind of work the slope angle of 41 °!

Hello neighbor mosellan
This famous Canal of the Marne to the Rhine river also passes less than 1km from my home, in the river Meuse.
And a little further South, it also has a specificity, barges and pleasure boaters must take this channel in the Tunnel de Mauvages (the common, where it begins), which is 4877m, and exits at Demange aux Eaux (other common meusienne). As there was no place of hâler the barges as more of tow-path, and as the 'new' boats work with combustion engines and pollute more or less, there is a towboat power. It works on the principle of a chain drowned to which he tows to take up to 10 barges. Two crossings in each direction are planned each day.
It is less spectacular in pictures as it is under-ground
Your photos and explanations are extra

It is located on the site outside if you look closely you see some vegetation to the right, and hanging a bit in the middle. There are other illustrations of places to visit around the corner from the right door is a door Phalsbourg Vauban fortification. As the illustration shows the tray half way, I found it explicit!
