Author 'Rico83' (Id 210196 ) : The Golden temple of Dambulla is a buddhist site in Sri Lanka, located in Dambulla, in the north of Kandy in the district of Matale, some twenty kilometres south-west of Sigirîya. The city of Dambulla is built around a large granite rock that contains a large complex of caves, the Raja Maha Vihara, dating from the first century. It is the most important and best-preserved complex of caves in Sri Lanka.

The site consists of approximately eighty caves, five sanctuaries, four main monasteries. It consists of 157 statues, 153 Buddha images, 3 images royal and 4 images of deities. The murals, covering 2,100 square meters, representing, among others, the temptation of Buddha by the demon Mā ra and his first sermon. There are also statues of the hindu deities Vishnu and Saman.
