The Fort of Bertheaume is in Plougonvelin, not very far from Brest.
The fort of Bertheaume appears for the first time in a deed of march 8, 1474, but it seems that this first fort was destroyed in 1558. Then, it is Vauban who decided to make the first bulwark of defence of the harbor of Brest established a battery in 1689 to repel an attack or a landing English. It proved its usefulness during the landing missed English at Camaret in 1694.
Until 1835, the date of construction of the first bridge, the island is connected to the mainland by a gondola.
The barracks and the wall of the enclosure, the powder stores (one of which is 13 meters under the earth) and the low battery date back to the middle of the eighteenth century. On the other hand, casemates were built between 1880 and 1890.
