) : Guatemala has emerged from a period of military dictatorship in 1996 after a civil war that though little publicized caused numerous massacres of opponents. In 2000 there were free elections and the typical house in a village is the "advertising" has a political party. It may be noted that as farmers are often illiterate, the party combines a visual symbol (the white rabbit) so that those people who can not read recognize the proper ballot in the voting booth. The other parties each have a different visual symbol.
