The harvest of the tobacco

Author 'Hiedra98' (Id 190212 ) : In Cuba, the tobacco crop starts in the month of march and will continue until may. Here in Pinar del Rio, to the west of the island, the region most famous for the manufacture of Cohiba, Partagas and other Montecristo. The leaves, bound two by two, are dried for a few days in the open air, and then will be suspended for 50 days in the hangars very airy as you can see in the background. To have a ground very light, the fields are ploughed with the plough to the oxen.

The sun on the leaves by the two will accelerate the drying, they can go more quickly to the hangar Like a field of poppies in the bottom of the rock wall, the color of the earth simply ? Thank you for this picture very interesting.

Yes, these are not poppies, but the lateritic soil freshly plowed red color brick as laterite comes from the latin word 'later' which means brick. A lot of laterite in Cuba, as in Madagascar and here in New Caledonia. These are soils poor in mineral nutrients because, leached by tropical rainfall but cultivable.

I would add that the tobacco leaves undergo even more care. First sorting : the most beautiful will be used for the cape, the outer shell, and the rest for the filler, the filling of the habano or the puro. And still the mysterious cycles of drying and wetting.

For the harvest I did not know, but I've seen fields of tobacco in France, in the Dordogne and of course I made photos. Thank you, this landscape is beautiful.
