I had sent my comment to Cathy... here it is : 'an image of low key ? N&B makes the mystery total. Cathy has cleared the way. It seems, indeed, a pilgrim, and the butt could be a knocker, door'.

I had seen your previous comment, but I was waiting for someone else to come and give you a clue.
For the solution, Guylaine comes give practically the answer. It wouldn't be anything that the place and details regarding the character.
I let a little time before giving the precise answer.

A beautiful image , a monk may be, in an abbey somewhere in France. Or just the REAL grim reaper .

You have almost found everything. It would be an issue as the location and precision on this 'character'.
For the place, he is already in my gallery.

I agree for the allusion to the movie and book by Umberto Eco. However, for me, the puzzle is total. This may be a pilgrim, but the garment seems to me to be very rude. The butt seems to be stuck in a wall. We will see if the others will be more insightful than me, otherwise we need an index.

Joel, it is to me that you've answered. So Charly did not have to see your answer.
